Not a bad showing at all by Delaware High Schools. 3 draftees.

His Dad works for the Cardinals. Ripken's kid was drafted by the Orioles. Two guys that wouldn't have been drafted if their dads worked for GM.

Not sure about May, but Ripken certainly would have been drafted. Has a scholarship to South Carolins and was on many teams draft boards.

I have seen them both play, I stand by my statement.

It's pretty funny how when something good happens to a kid there is always someone who will to try and tear him down! Let me guess Johnny...you are a jealous coach who played and never got drafted or you are a jealous high school player who can't stand the fact that a kid could be drafted and you didn't. Maybe a parent who's kid didn't get drafted...whatever the case. You are a sad person in your own sad world. Applaud the kid and applaud the fact that he also got a scholarship to Villanova and the the fact that he has a chance to be a third generation MLB player. But you can't and you won't. Derrick is a great kid who has a bright future.

In 1988 Tom Lasorda has Dodger brass draft his godson Mike Piazza in the 62nd round. Many thought Piazza was drafted as a courtesy by Lasorda to his lifelong friend Vince Piazza, Mike's dad.

If he goes to Nova maybe he will work his way up in the draft like the Neill kid from Seaford.. (Do I have the right kid?)
6/10 11:13 PM | IP: Logged
Chesdel - you have the right "kid" (man now)...Mike chose to go to 'Nova, and it proved to be a very good decision - drafted by the A's in the 2nd round during his Jr. year playing for the Wildcats...good run in the Minors led to a very short stint in The Bigs; However, also led to a spot on the Gold medal winning USA olympic baseball team

derrick may got drafted because of his last name. He couldn't hit Sanford or Tower Hill Pitching and had one scholarship offer. Ryan Ripken is the same way he is going to SC due to publicity but will never play.

4theboys...I guess you saw all of Derrick May's games? He hit well over .400 every year except his freshmen year. By the way he hit .385 that year. He also led his team in HR's. By the way he hit a grand slam against Tower Hill to clinch Tatnall's independent conference championship again. Like I said to Johnny. He should be applauded not put down. You are a sad person who has an axe to grind because he wasn't drafted or who's son wasn't drafted or just couldn't play or maybe you are a kid yourself... Maybe it's the fact that you think you know about the game and the pro draft...maybe you didn't get a scholarship to play. Whatever it is? It's sad and so are you! This is the problem with Delaware baseball...too many wanna be's and never were's. Grow up be a man or a woman.

not downing you "Derrick May or one of the mays" But he wouldn't of gotten drafted if it wasn't for his last name, bottom line. The kid was not even one of the top 5 outfielders this year. Hopefully he develops the next four years in college and continues the family tradition.
6/11 3:23 PM | IP: Logged
That really has no bearing on whether he should've gotten drafted or not. He was drafted because of his future potential ability. Just like his father who was a late bloomer. It's not about what he is or isn't now, it is about what he could be in the future like many who are drafted. Bottomline. And yes bloodlines do help. But you started this by putting him down. Saying he only had one scholarship offer and that he couldn't hit Sanford and Tower Hill pitching. He's been to showcases and to the breakthrough series in NC. It's about exposure and future potential. Not what he does against Delaware high school pitching. Why is that so hard to understand?

Thanks, Dawg. I remember the gold medal very well and he played for Tom Lasorda in those Olympic games. I just was having a difficult time pulling out that name. He isn't a kid anymore....

Derrick May Sr. not a late bloomer #9 overall pick in the mid 1980's. Trivia question: What organization does Derrick May Sr. work for today?
6/11 10:19 PM | IP: Logged
Do you really want to keep going with this Johnny? You are envious at the fact that he got drafted and you think you are the baseball guru in Delaware. Guess what? Your bitterness won't change the fact that he did get drafted or the fact that he will get the opportunity to play higher baseball. There are tons of good Delaware high school players who were just that good high school players. So don't feel bad you didn't make it. All you see is right now. The Cardinals see the future. I guess you know Derrick May Sr. well then?

Well, stitchintime. I am a longtime friend of the family who knows a lot about baseball and the May's. I like the # 27.  Only thing caught is the jealous and envious tone of this blog. When it comes down to it... You and the other guy sound like petty and whiny individuals who lack any sort of character or intellect.

Derrick May Jr. has a great network of friends and family who are very supportive of him and his future. There will be many people who will hate the fact that he has an opportunity that many do not have. It is sad that people stoop to such spineless reteoric on the internet. I am glad that most people aren't like this. Just a small few. Most people in Delaware have a genuine and positive outlook on things and achievements. But, it is sad that a few small minded individuals chose to hide behind this blog and write trash. I hope those individuals feel better about themselves and their lives.

Good luck to Derrick Jr. in whatever direction he decides to take.  Since the CBA reduced the draft rounds from 50 to 40 no team is going to waste a draft pick on a kid they do not feel is capable of playing at the next level, regardless if family is in the organization.  I am sure Derrick would have had success at any high school in Delaware.

gotta agree with basballman27, JJ's numbers were not that impressive this season yet he was drafted by the Rangers based on athleticism...I dont care who your dad is, a major league team is not going to spend the 38th pick in the draft on you without seeing future potential, heck if that was the case they could of picked him up later down the road...I dont claim to be a scout but they must see something in both JJ and DMjr and I for one am proud of any kid that gets the opportunity to use sports to brighten their future whether it be in college,semi-pro or the pros...go Delaware sports and good luck, it would be pretty cool to see these young men on TV one day making us Delawareans proud

I try to stay away from threads like this but just wanted to add one thing while it's on the tip of my tongue that I think many people often ignore or maybe even never consider.

You absolutely have to want to go the distance if you want to play at the next level. Many folks who have been fortunate enough to participate at the next level understand what kind of commitment is involved and these are the families who produce successful, hard working student athletes. That's very important in all of this. Doesn't matter if you don't have the stats that the armchair coach watching from the side wants to see. It doesn't really matter who you know. As long as you're willing to sacrifice the little conveniences in life in order to take the extra steps that the average joe would traditionally view as a burden then you'll play at the next level whatever level that may be. If not, then you won't. That's a fact, agree or disagree.

Lots of times folks are quick to say junior made it because dad was something special but that's not it at all. These dads just happen to be the ones who know that commitment accross the board is key. Not only that but many baseball families who have participated at the next level understand what the commitment entails. It means you go the distance, as I mentioned. Is it any surprise that it's the coaches kids and those who are from families who have played at the next level are typically the ones who spend their time working on their games at the crack of dawn and go where ever they have to go to do it? I think not. In fact, if you want to succeed at any job then it's probably best to ask the one who has worked there the longest what is required as opposed to the one who has only been there for a short amount of time. Right? Baseball is no different.

You can't ever get to the next stepping stone unless you're willing to go for a very long walk though. Sometimes you have to stop and wait for a while even. I think many just think they can hop on the high speed rail and move right to college or the pros without sacrificing the extras. That's just not how it works at all. There are many aspects to the process beyond any game statistic and I think more folks who want to discuss what's involved with getting there should probably familiarize themselves with them instead of just saying the kids playing because of dad.

Of course, I certainly don't want to come off as the see all and know all about such things because I'm not but there's a lot more to it than the old gag about the kid getting a free pass because of who his dad is. Way more.

Edit -- Just wanted to share these relevant words of wisdom courtesy of the babe since some of the scribbles here reminded me of just how quickly they are sometimes forgotten once we play a little ball in HS and get to thinking we know everything about what really only amounts to a little bit of a much bigger ball of wax. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_cQ3qNUGBM&feature=related
