Saturday night at Baynard Stadium featured Salesianum battling the defending state champion Riders of Caesar Rodney. CR came into the game winning six of it's last seven games, while Sallies was only 3-2 in it's last five.
Ryan Kilpatrick opened the scoring early, finding the end zone on a 10 yard scamper, following a CR turnover in the game's first possession. Kilpatrick finished the game with 196 yards on the ground while carring the ball 24 times.
The game remained 7-0, until future Blue Hen Malcolm Yowk crossed the goal line with just under three minutes to go in the third quarter, and CR closed the gap to just one point, as the extra point was blocked. Kilpatrick then scored on a 4 yard run, putting the Sals up 14-6. Yowk answered, with a 95 yard return, and also threw the conversion to Jordan Henry, tying the score at 14.
CR had an opportunity to take the lead with just over 7 minutes left in the game, but a field goal attempt fell short. The Sals started a drive from their own 21, and connected on a 36 yard field goal with only 3 seconds on the clock to end the Riders' reign as champs.
St. Mark's vs. Sallies, it doesn't matter what sport it is, these two just don't like each other, and now for the first time ever, they will face each other for the football state championship.
St. Mark's was able to hold off previously undefeated AI DuPont 10-8 Friday night at Tiger Stadium. TJ DeMatteis kicked a 27 yard field goal, and TJ Yenias punched in a 3 yard TD to lead the Spartans to victory.
The Tigers scored on their first possession of the game, driving 85 yards that ended with a one yard run by CJ Jones. The PAT had a fumbled snap and the attempt failed. AI led the game in total yards 308-180, but were unable to put any more points on the board. They did get a safety to close the score to two points, and they had a field goal attempt fall short with just over a minute left in the game.
AI's best opportunity to pull ahead came just after TJ Yeninas put the Spartans ahead 10-6. The Tigers drove down the field, taking over 7 minutes off the clock, leading to a fourth and goal from the one yard line. CJ Jones called his own number, fumbled the ball, recovered it himself, but then was wrapped up by Spartan lineman Donte Potter. AI turned it over on downs, and the top defense in the state were able to get Tyler Hrycak in the end zone for a safety. This led to the ensuing drive that led to the missed field goal attempt, sealing the St. Mark's victory.
St. Mark's will now look to avenange the loss just three weeks ago as they were shellacked in the second half by Salesianum. The Sals have won four of the last five games against the Spartans, and are healthy once again. The final will be played at Delaware State Friday night at 7PM.
In D2 playoffs, Tyler Cornish had 4 TDS and 137 yards on only 12 carries as six seed Delmar, once again, got past top seed Laurel 33-13 at Laurel. Cornish opened the scoring on the games first possession with a seven yard scamper into the end zone. Chris Jones answered with a 27 yard TD run, punishing several Wildcat defenders along the way. Cornish returned the favor, again, and again, with runs of 54 and 22 yards in two consectutive Delmar possesions, giving the Wilcats a 19-7 halftime lead.
Laurel got back into the game on a 1 yard run by QB Chris Cutsail midway through the 3rd quarter, and were down 19-13 going into the final 12 minutes. Delmar proved to be too tough for the Bulldogs, scoring on both possessions in the quarter, and taking time off the clock while doing so, giving them the 33-13 victory and a berth into the final game Saturday night at Delaware State.
Hodgson combined 114 yards and three TDs, along with 84 yards and two TDs from Jamaal Jackson and Tyler Hunter in the second half to topple Pencader Charter and will try to win their second crown in three years.
Pencader Charter was coming off it's first ever school victory in any state tournament sport playoff, and showed it was not just happy to be here, jumping out to a 21-0 halftime lead.
Jerome Smith opened the scoring with a 3 yard TD run, and senior QB Brandon Norman followed with at 1 yard TD run, and 12 yard toss to his brother Brian. Norman finished with 292 yards passing and four touchdowns, including his 1 yard run.
Hodgson RB Jamaal Jackson would not be denied, and stepped up at halftime to remind his team they were dedicating this game game to former assistant coach Richard Schueler, who passed away earlier this year. Hunter and Jackson alternated TD runs and pushed Hodgson ahead 28-21, taking advantage of Pencader fumbles. The Titans closed the gap on the second Norman to Norman TD pass, but the extra point banged off the upright and the quarter ended with the Silver Eagles ahead 28-27.
Jamaal Jackson closed Hodgson's scoring in the fourth quarter with a 16 yard run and put the Eagles up 34-27. Pencader, who defeated Hodgson earlier in the year, would not go away quietly. With only 37 seconds left to go in the game, it was Norman to Norman for the third time, and the Titans were once again within one. Head Coach Rashaan Matthews decided it was time to draw the line here and now, and kept his offense on the field to go for two and the win. The QB draw was called and linebacker Craig Bell sniffed it out and made the game saving tackle short of the goal line.
Hodgson will go for it's second championship in three years against a Delmar team it beat on September 18th 38-14.
The Wildcats however, have won it's last nine games, and have scored 110 points in their last three games. Kickoff is 7PM at Delaware State.
