PLAYERS
St. Andrew’s senior running back Elijah Weeks.

Last year’s State leader in touchdowns (19) picked up right where he left
off in 2002. Elijah carried the ball 22 times for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns (5,
27 and 19 yards) as the Saints stretched their unbeaten streak to 13 games
(12-0-1) with a 42-14 win over the Maret School. Elijah showed his versatility
by leading the team with 6 tackles and forcing a fumble from his free safety
spot.
Tower Hill juniors, QB Matt Moyer, RB Nick
Jacobs, FB/LB Nick Rossi and senior G/LB Dan Mita. Rossi and Mita helped
clear the way for an offense that scored five touchdowns in a 36-8 trouncing of
West Nottingham (Md). On defense, the stellar linebackers notched 13 tackles
apiece. Moyer was the star of the game, rushing for 4 touchdowns (2, 22, 10 and
26 yards) and Jacobs scored on a 40 yard run and drilled a 21 yard FG as the
Hillers evened their record at 1-1.
Lake Forest seniors, QB Desmond Felton and RB
Rodney Young. Felton completed 6 of 9 passes for 115 yards and 2 touchdowns
(49, 5 yards) and added 98 yards rushing as Lake (2-0) mauled Polytech (0-2)
32-0. The electrifying Young broke the century mark for the second straight
week, carrying the ball 12 times for 115 yards and a touchdown. For the season,
Felton has completed 10 of 19 passes for 201 yards, 3 touchdowns and one
interception while Young has carried the rock 27 times for 311 yards and 1
touchdown. Both players will need to bring their ‘A’ games to the field in
the next two weeks as the Spartans visit D-I powers Caesar Rodney and Dover.
St. Elizabeth’s senior RB Joe Barbato and the
entire Viking defense. The powerful Barbato lead the way with 3 rushing
touchdowns as Coach Joe Hemphill’s team rebounded from a season opening loss
to Mt. Pleasant to dominate the Delmar Wildcats (0-2) on their home turf, 34-0.
The Vikings defense completely stifled the Delmar offense. In fact, the furthest
the Wildcats were able to march in the game was the St. E’s 47 yard line.
St. Mark’s seniors, QB Joe Wright, TE/LB Mark
Lemon and junior WR Andrew McKeefery. The Wright to Lemon connection
accounted for 128 of the Spartans (2-0) 238 yards passing in a hard fought 34-12
win over Concord (1-1). The pair hooked up 7 times in the game, including 29 and
38 yard passes that helped set up two second half touchdowns. Mckeefery had 4
receptions for 51 yards and two touchdowns, giving him 4 touchdown grabs in two
games. Wright has been on fire, completing 33 of 47 passes for 466 yards, 5
touchdowns and just one interception in two games.
Howard seniors, QB O.J. Brown, WR/DB Mike
Schmidt, C/LB Joe Todd and freshman DB Dean Sutton. Brown is starting to
look quite comfortable in his first year as the Wildcats’ starting QB. On
Friday night, he fired 2 gorgeous touchdown passes to Mike Schmidt and
scored on a superb 34 yard, tackle breaking, touchdown run as Howard (2-0)
rolled past Delcastle (0-2) 28-16 at Baynard Stadium. Schmidt scored on a
perfectly thrown, 29 yard fade in the first quarter and then split a double team
to score on a 31 yard post pattern in the second quarter. Todd was dominant on
both sides of the ball. The 5 foot 10, 249 pound, senior used his quickness to
wreak havoc in the Delcastle backfield and intercepted a pass, returning it 35
yards to extinguish the Cougars comeback hopes. The hard hitting Sutton
intercepted a first half pass and then opened the second half with a succession
of pad popping hits to fire up the Howard defense.
Friends seniors, QB Hunter McMillan, WR Shawn
Hollingsworth and junior WR Jeff Scarborough. McMillan had a hand in five
touchdowns as the Quakers rocked Princeton Day, 42-8. Hunter completed 9
of 14 passes for 125 yards and 3 touchdowns (8, 45 and 10 yards) and carried the
ball 5 times for 26 yards and 2 touchdowns (15 and 10 yards) as the Quakers
improved to 2-0. Hollingsworth took a punt 70 yards for a touchdown on his way
to racking up 147 return yards. Scarborough made just 2 catches but both went
for scores (45 and 10 yards). The Quakers have now scored a State leading 86
points in just 2 games.
Newark seniors, QB Dan Perkins, TE Jon Lanouette
and junior RB Sam Cotton. Perkins completed 12 of 19 passes for 148 yards
and 2 touchdowns as the Yellowjackets (2-0) posted a huge 26-14 win over highly
touted Caesar Rodney (1-1). Jon Lanouette caught 5 passes for 128 yards,
including a game winning 5 yard touchdown pass from Perkins that put Newark
ahead to stay, 19-14, with 3:15 left in the game. Cotton had his second straight
big game, rushing for 195 yards on 31 carries, one touchdown and catching a pass
for another. Super Sam leads the State in rushing with 423 yards on 66 carries.
Caravel senior QB Justin Bittner and JR WR/DB
Willie Fowler. Bittner threw 3 touchdowns passes for the second straight
week as Caravel (2-0) knocked off Seaford (0-2) 26-13. Two of those passes went
to Fowler, who is now tied with St. Mark’s Andrew McKeefery for the
State lead with 4 touchdown receptions. Bittner has been the most surprising
player on the State’s most surprising team. Justin leads the State with 6
touchdown passes as he leads the Bucs into this weekend’s crucial showdown
with 1-0 Milford.
PLAYS
Delcastle at Howard. Howard was clinging to
a 20-16 lead with a little more than six minutes remaining in Friday’s game
when the skies opened up and heavy rain began to fall.
The Wildcats had a second and 8 with the ball at
the Delcastle 34 yard line. Quarterback O. J. Brown faked a handoff up
the middle and ran to his left. The willowy, 6 foot 1, 165 pound Brown appeared
to be going down when he collided with three Cougar defenders at the 30 yard
line.
However, O.J. kept fighting, furiously pumping his
legs as he slithered through the defense and broke free for an amazing 34 yard
touchdown that put the finishing touches on Howard’s 28-16 victory.
Newark at Caesar Rodney. This highly
anticipated, rain delayed, Monday night showdown lived up to all the hype.
Caesar Rodney, trailing 19-14, had driven to the
Newark 40 yard line behind 2 passes from Josh Coveleski to Blair
Newman with less than three minutes left to play.
On first down, the Riders fumbled on a botched
handoff attempt and Newark’s Esterville Cotton, brother of star running
back Sam, picked up the ball and raced 62 yards for the clinching touchdown in a
26-14 road victory.
