WILMINGTON, DE – Action resumed for the second day of the third annual SL24 Memorial Classic. The games were exciting, and Delaware’s talent was on full display. Here are brief recaps of the day’s games.
PENN PREVAILS, TAKES DOWN ST GEORGES IN EXTRAS
Senior Devin Hackett scored 16 points including the last 6 in Overtime as the Colonials (2-5) held off a late run by St Georges to win 60-53 in the first game and second day of the 3rd Annual SL24 Memorial Classic. Jalen Sample (Sophomore) and Jehiah Eldrigde (Junior) each chipped in with 11 points.
William Penn battled back in the first using a 7-0 run in the first to take a 9-7 lead. They would battle back on three separate occasions erasing three St Georges 6-0 runs in the 3rd. Hackett after the game informed us that he has no interests or offers yet but according to Coach Gary Lumpkin those are not that far behind.
As for the Hawks (3-3) they were led by Senior Le’Mar Wright with 16 points and had help from Junior Naaman Tucker with 10 points.
APPO JAGS CRUISE OVER CONCORD
Lorenzo Carrier scored a team-high 14 points as the Jaguars (7-1) took control from the start and never looked back defeating Concord 64-53 despite leading as much by 28 points.
The Senior Carrier who will take his talents to Miami did most of the damage from the 3rd into the 4th with a couple of impressive dunks and long-range shooting. Fellow Senior Charles Bedwell chipped in with 13 points and had 10 points from Sophomore Owen Parrish.
As for the Raiders (1-2) who played their first game since January 14th with 5 games postponed by either the weather or COVID 19 they were led by Senior Luke Gabrysh with a game-high 21 points.
SANFORD ERUPTS IN THE 3RD TAKES DOWN SALLIES IN FINAL GAME
Nnanna Njoku scored 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds as the Warriors (6-1) used a 19-6 run to defeat Salesianum in the finale 60-30 in a game that certainly featured Division 1 Caliber across the board.
The Nigerian Phenom will take his talents to Villanova and had 2 blocks and 3 assists to fill up his stat sheet. Njoku was not the only Warrior who made noise yesterday as 6’3 Senior Brandon Dwyer scored 12 points with most of it coming in the 3rd on 4-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Dwyer has been hearing from American University and Delaware.
Sanford who won the DIAA state Championship two years ago also features a few other Division 1 hopefuls in 6’5 Senior Carter Ruby who contributed with 3 points and 6’2 Senior Nasir Cowan who had 4 points but excelled on the defensive side really doing a number on Sallies best player Rasheen Caulk Jr forcing 5 turnovers on the Senior.
Speaking of the Sallies (3-2) they were led by Senior Rasheen Caulk with 11 points. Senior Ethan Hinds chipped in with 8 points.
In other action:
William Penn (2-5) stunned St Georges (3-3) 60-53 thank to 16 points from Senior Devin Hackett including 6 in a row from the foul line between the 4th and Overtime. Le’Mar Wright led the way for the Hawks w 16 points of his own.
In game 2 Lorenzo Carrier (Miami Baseball) scored 14 points and was among three players in double figures as Appoquinimink (7-1) took down Concord 64-53 and led by as much as 28. The Raiders (1-2) playing their first game in nearly a month thanks to 5 postponed games were led by Senior Luke Gabrysh with a game-high 21 points.
