Soccer Tourney: All set but the seedings
The past few days has gone a long way to clear up which teams will make the 2008 State Soccer Tournament. Early season powers Concord and Newark struggled at the end, while teams like Seaford and Middletown came on strong. DePreps.com takes a close look.
DePreps.com believes that the state tournament will include the following 16 teams:
Salesianum 9-3-2
Indian River 12-1-2
Caesar Rodney 12-2-1
Charter School 10-3-2
Middletown 12-3
Tatnall 11-3
Sussex Tech 11-2-2
St. Mark's 11-3-1
Dover 11-3-1
Caravel Academy 10-4-2
Sanford 10-3-1
Archmere Academy 11-4
Brandywine 12-4
Seaford 11-4
Delmar 10-4-1
Wilmington Friends 10-3-1
The reason all of the above teams are likely locks of the tournament is two fold
1) Teams such as Newark (9-6-1) and Concord (9-5-2) missed opportunities to put themselves in the mix by losing games. Newark was shocked by Mt Pleasant 4-3 on Saturday and Brandywine defeated Concord by a score of 1-0 on Monday night. Both of those loses made it almost impossible for either team to secure a tournament bid
2) Teams such as DMA (10-5-1), Cape Henlopen (9-5-1) and St Thomas More (10-6) have impressive records, but that is due to playing very week schedules. Those schedules have allowed them to pile up wins against inferior competition.
With so many upsets this year, the tournament could be one of the most unpredictable in recent memory . Salesianum would seem to be the favorite as they are undefeated in-state, but they did tie both Charter and St. Marks. The Sals are still the odds on favorite to take home the championship, but they can't afford to take anyone lightly.
DePreps.com will have our tourney picks when the brackets are released.
