fullback Dave Hewes punched it in on a four yard run, the PAT was good,
giving Penn a 7-0 lead. The first quarter concluded when Colonials’ Sophomore Javier
Berrios recovered a Yellow jacket fumble at the Penn 16. Berrios came up
with another big play this time sacking Stephan Williams on 4th
& 10 from the 10-yard line.
Penn’s junior quarterback Steve Alexander threw a 21-yard pass
on 3rd and 13 after a five yard Delay of Game Penalty.
Later that drive with 5:01 left in the second quarter senior running back
Gary Anderson ran it 22 yards to give the Colonials a 14-0 lead.

the Newark 9-yard line but failed to score. On the next play Newark threw an
interception on the 7 yard line, the ball was picked off by Junior Defensive
back Darin Henry.

The state’s biggest high school football rivalry was looking to be a
Penn blowout. Newark had managed to
get the ball past midfield once and that was due to a Colonial punt, then they
threw a pick on the next play. The
Yellow jackets failed to pick up a 3rd down conversion in the first
half.
mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">The weather like this game changed in the second
half, changing from rain in the first half to sun in the second half.
Newark’s only mistake of the second half was another Williams’
interception. The two Penn strong points struggled in the second half with the
run game being stifled and the defense collapsing.
mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Newark’s Williams changed from his first half woes
as he started the scoring for the Jackets with a 1 yard TD run with 9:12 left in
the 4th, the PAT was no good after the bad handle as the holder was
tackled. Then Williams scored again on a 10-yard TD run with Williams throwing a
pass Senior Naif Abdullah knotting the game up at 14-14.
mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Steve Alexander threw an INT on the following Penn
drive. The next Yellow jacket drive
was filled with controversial calls. The
first was a pass interference call when a Newark wideout fell down and a Penn
defensive back stopped short of the fallen receiver.

was ruled as no penalty on the play.
mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">On the same drive Stephan Williams once again ran it
for a TD a 9 yard run with :43 seconds left in the game.
The Jackets took a page from Penn’s book last week when the Colonials
scored three times in the fourth quarter to win.
mso-bidi-font-size:10.0pt">Penn started their next drive with :37 seconds left
in the game. The #2 Yellow jackets
picked off Alexander again to clinch the win, and add another chapter to this
storied rivalry.
